What to Expect During Your CT Exam
During a CT scan, you will lie on a comfortable exam table that moves through the circular opening of the scanner. As the scanner rotates, it captures thin “slices” of your body, which are then reconstructed by a computer to create a detailed, 3D image. The process is painless and typically takes less than 30 minutes.
Some CT exams use contrast materials to enhance visualization of blood vessels, organs, or tissues. Depending on your exam type, contrast may be administered orally or through an IV. If you are scheduled for a CT with contrast and have diabetes, kidney disease, or allergies to iodine, please inform our staff before your appointment.
Preparing for Your CT Scan
Patients should wear loose, comfortable clothing and may be asked to change into a gown to prevent interference from metal objects such as zippers or jewelry. For most studies, refrain from eating or drinking for at least four hours before your appointment unless otherwise directed. Pregnant patients should notify both their physician and our staff prior to the scan.
After the Exam
Once your CT exam is complete, you may return to normal activities immediately. Drinking water is encouraged to help flush any contrast material from your system. Your images will be reviewed by one of our board-certified radiologists, and a detailed report will be sent to your referring physician, who will contact you to discuss the results.
